I want to apologize in advance, as this is a bit of a tangent from my usual posts and it’s slightly rant-ish. I currently have Exede Satellite Internet and pay my own bill each month, so I felt that writing an honest review could save someone the mental strain I have dealt with for the last 9 months.
Considering that we already live in rural Wyoming, internet is not as readily available as other, more populated areas. March 2015 our life on the World Wide Web became a nightmare. We moved about 4 miles out of city limits to a low valley just across the river, where cable and fiber optic internet services are not provided. We were previously with Century Link when we lived in city limits; I would give my left leg to have them again.
We thought we could make it off our phone provider’s data package and a hotspot, but turned out that we didn’t get excellent cell service either. Most evenings were spent holding our phones above our heads trying to refresh email or Facebook. Watching a video was impossible.
In a hasty decision, we picked up Exede internet because a local Exede technician said it was incredibly fast for satellite internet. Little did we know that we were signing the next two years of our life away.
While it’s unreasonable to compare fiber optic internet providers to satellite internet providers, I feel there should be a happy medium for the price you pay with satellite. At the low price of $140 a month you get a mere 25Gb of data (which blows by super fast if you are doing anything other than checking your email and your Facebook), and that price is almost triple what we were paying with Century Link ($50/month). It’s impossible to stream a video or play games online with 12MBPS. Previously, we were getting 40MBPS. We have had to limit our online activities to ensure we stay within our data limits, because if we go over, Exede charges an extra $10 per Gigabyte.
To top it off, we lose connection on a daily basis for 5 to 10 minutes at a time. In the last two hours that I have been fiddling with my blog, catching up with emails, and doing some research, my internet has disconnected five times. Granted, we are having some crazy winter weather and high winds, but I’d be lying if I said it wasn’t upsetting.
I will note that when my internet stays connected, I can browse webpages, upload pictures, and download music with decent speed. It’s nowhere close to what it was with fiber optic internet, but it’s sufficient. I have heard through the grapevine that Exede is one of the faster satellite internet providers. Also, every time I have had to call customer service the representatives are very kind despite my frustration. They are helpful and have always connected me with someone who can fix my problem, if the first person I talked to is unable to do so.
Still, I would not recommend Exede to a friend or family member, unless it was their only option. I would rather increase the data on my phone package, and get a hotspot than pay an outrageous amount of money for such limited service.
