Whether you are headed out for a day hike or you’re a momma looking for a quick and stable source of energy, these raw chocolate coconut energy balls are right for you.
As summer comes to a close up here in the Northwest, I am reflecting on how much we’ve done over the past few months. From hiking to the Heart Mountain Summit to sliding down a natural rock waterslide, and tent camping to having a snowball fight on the top of a mountain in July, we have been pretty active.
I’ve had a few people ask how I’ve managed to hike/waddle up these trails at 30+ weeks pregnant. A lot of it is a passion for staying active and being outdoors, and a lot of it comes down to how I fuel my body before and during a hike. Some of my favorite trail snacks are turkey jerky, trail mix, and homemade raw energy balls like these Chocolate Coconut Energy Balls made with Kashi® GOLEAN™ Protein Powder
Being pregnant, I try to keep my pack as light as possible. Water is my number one priority, and the hydration pack in my backpack carries 2 liters of water, which weighs about 4.5lbs when full. My next priorities are food and extra clothes, so you can imagine how the weight in my pack can add up quickly.
It’s super important to stay hydrated, fueled, and comfortable on the trail. The infographic below shows my top 5 hiking tips. Whether you are a newbie hiker or have experience on the mountain and trail, it’s important to keep your health in mind when heading out for the day.
These little bites of raw chocolatey goodness are my go-to hiking snack because they are lightweight and provide stable energy before, during, and after the hike. I whip these up in about 10 minutes the night before and store them in the refrigerator until we pack up the next morning. And did I mention that they taste like an Almond Joy and have 5g of protein per ball?!?
I highly suggest using plant-based protein powder, like the new Kashi GOLEAN Dark Cocoa Protein Powder in this recipe. The flavor isn’t chalky and the dough has a much more appealing consistency than whey based powders. Plus, using plant-based protein is a great way to diversify your protein intake. And, Kashi GOLEAN Protein is vegan, gluten free, has 1 billion CFU probiotics to support inner balance, and contains 20-21g of protein per serving
Kashi GOLEAN Protein Powder is available at Target, making it an easily accessible ingredient in your chocolate coconut energy balls. Also, right now you can use the code: TGTKASHI to get $10 off one Kashi Protein Powder.
I used honey in to sweeten my dough, but feel free to use agave if you want to make these vegan. Also, if you don’t have almond milk on hand, you can sub for another milk like coconut, cashew, or dairy.
